The Winchester Mystery House is located in San Jose right across the street from Santana Row and the movie theater. Crazy spot for this humungous mansion to be right in the middle of town. We took the tour and it did not meet up to our expectations. It was still worth going to see once but just know it is over priced. Make sure if you go you get at least 25% off by finding a Groupon or a coupon in the Bay Area Parent magazine. That’s what we did. If you don’t want to spend the money to go on the tour the mansion is still worth checkin gout. The gardens, the gun museum, and the visitor center located on the mansion property are always open and free for the public to roam.
If you want to take the tour know there are several tours you can take. The Mansion tour costs $26-$36 is lasts a little over an hour and takes you through 110 of the 160 rooms. That’s what we did. The next tour is the Grand Estate Tour in which you see all the rooms and go behind-the-scenes. It costs $34-$44 and it lasts 2 1/2 hours. The final tour is the flashlight tour they do every Friday the 13th. It costs $49.95 and last 55 minutes.
On the Mansion tour we really enjoyed hearing the history of the Winchester family and how they landed their fortune. The house was definitely peculiar with it’s doors and staircases to no where. You could tell Mrs. Winchester had many superstitions. One in which she thought if she could never stop construction on the house. The reason we were so disappointed with the tour was because a lot of it was just left under construction. There are very few rooms that are actually furnished with time period furniture. Still you do see a decked out bedroom, dining room, and ballroom. Fun place to learn a little history and go back in time.
